How to Extract Honey (Small Scale)

No extractor, no problem. Many small-scale beekeepers and hobbyists rely on good ole hard work to harvest the honey from their hives, while larger scale farms use a tool called an extractor, which keeps the honeycombs in tact, and requires less physical work, you can read more about that process here.

To begin you will need to take a bowl with a strainer of some sort: cheesecloth tends to be the most popular. The hard part for most beekeepers is crushing the combs. Remove all of the combs into a bowl my scraping them off the frame. The benefit to an extractor is it doesn't damage the bombs, leaving less work for the bees next season. Ones all of the frames are cleaning, it is important to crush the combs completely to release all the honey stored inside. The crushed mixture should sit and strain overnight. In the morning you will have a bowl of honey and a cheesecloth full of wax, you can then melt the wax down for candles or soap or simply dispose of it.
